- MIGUEL DIAS
ABOUT US | MEET THE TEAM
You could say that Miguel’s love of wine is in his blood. Throughout his life, regular visits to his grandfather’s farm imbued him with passion for the grape.
He literally learned the business from the ground up, helping with harvest and gaining practical knowledge of traditional winemaking methods as passed down through the generations in his Portuguese winemaking family
Miguel’s business acumen landed him a position as a business manager of a multinational company in Spain, and he relocated to Madrid for three years. During this time, he immersed himself in the vastly different food and wine culture, falling in love with Spanish traditions, their wine and cuisine. It was here that he became friends and colleagues with Rafael Segovia, and together they went on to found Wineberia out of their mutual passion for Iberian wines.
With a stated mission to break free of commonly held wine snobbery, Miguel brings an air of simplicity to the task of wine study. Putting an emphasis on the social and entertaining aspects of wine culture, he hopes to break down centuries of tradition into language that is easy to understand and fun to learn.
“Salvador Dali” by Randal Huiskens
Miguel:”I feel very inspired by the talent and irreverence of Salvador Dali, the Spanish surrealist painter that constantly challenged status quo with his creativity. He was also the author of my favourite quote about wine: great wine requires a mad man to grow the vine, a wise man to watch over it, a lucid poet to make it, and a lover to drink it!”
- RAFAEL SEGOVIA
Rafael was born and raised in Burgos, Spain, a region located halfway between La Rioja and Ribera Del Duero, affording him the opportunity to explore the region’s wine routes and meet the producers of some of the most famous and beloved wine regions in the world.
After meeting Miguel in a Madrid wine club and enduring many long hours tasting and debating the attributes of the great wines of the region, they developed an idea that would later become Wineberia.
A journalist by trade, Rafael is also a hard-core Real Madrid fan as well as an amateur Spanish guitarist. His travels through remote and seldom visited regions in Spain while he is “on tour” affords him many personal relationships with small boutique producers, giving him a fresh and unique perspective with regard to the regions, the winemakers and the wine they produce.
“The Happy Fiddler” by Gerard van Honthorst
Rafael: “I really identify with the Merry Fiddler, a painting with a witty character that combines my biggest passions in life: wine and music.”
- FRANCISCO SOBRAL
Francisco studied at Evora University in the heart of Alentejo region, and learned firsthand all the ‘insider’ secrets related to wine and food from the region. With a long history of dedication to the wine trade, some of his experience includes managing a wine store and making his own wine. Currently located in the up and coming Portuguese wine appellation of Alenquer, Francisco is a oenological consultant to small and medium sized producers in the region. As a contributor to Wineberia, he brings a lifetime of passion for wine and a unique perspective on its enjoyment.
“The Two Satyrs“ by Peter Paul Rubens
Francisco:”When I look at the Two Satyrs I always revisit playful and flirty episodes from my life, many of them experienced while holding a glass of fine wine.”
- MONICA YOUNG
With a professional background in marketing, Monica brings a deep understanding and love for new media, technology, video and web development to the Wineberia team. A native of Liverpool in the United Kingdom, she spent several years in Portugal as part of the Erasmus student exchange program and fell in love with the culture of the region – most especially its wine. Having a lifelong friend in Miguel, Monica jumped at the invitation to join Wineberia, excited at the prospect of putting her love of Portugal and its wine to work. Currently located in UK, she travels to Portugal often for social and ‘research’ reasons, visiting friends old and new, and discovering new cellars along the way.
“Saba with Red Wine” by Fabian Perez
Monica:”I am a major enthusiast of all art from Fabian Perez, but Saba With Red Wine stands out as my favourite due to its relaxed and highly sensual energy. And the girl is so sexy; you have to love it 🙂”
- FRIENDS FROM THE WINE WORLD
The World of Wine is filled with interesting people who are passionate about learning, and sharing what they know. Contrary to what many may think, most wine lovers – professionals included – are active participants in the demystification of wine, wanting nothing more than to ensure that every wine experience is as pleasurable as it can possibly be, free of the snobbery and condescending attitudes that many associate with the subject.
In our travels, we have compiled a global network of incredibly interesting people who are passionate about wine, and especially about the wines of Portugal and Spain. Some are winemakers or enologists, some are producers, others are journalists or sommeliers, but each contributes a unique perspective to Wineberia that is related to their area of expertise.
In keeping with our inclusive and community-driven philosophies, we invite like-minded others to join in the conversation, raise a glass and toast to generations of smiles, all for the love of wine.
“Marriage at Cana” by Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen, portrays the celebration where water was turned into wine.
