Be a part of the oldest Basque tradition

Get a taste of local life in the Basque Country by experiencing one of the region’s most beloved culinary traditions: a steak meal with natural apple cider at a Basque cider house. Naiara, your local Sherpa, will take you to a 100-year-old cider house in the countryside, a magical place to meet and chat with locals of the area. When the cider-maker shouts “txotx” don’t forget to refill your glasses with delicious cider fresh from the kupela (barrel). During this informal evening, you’ll also have time to learn all about this artisan, seasonal product made with local apples of the Basque Country. Dinner will be served with a hearty meal of T-bone steak (chuletón) Idiazabal cheese with quince jam and local sweets.

Meet Naiara, Your Native Sherpa

Naiara went with journalism as her chosen career, but also used her love of all things culinary when she landed a job with a food PR agency in London. Naiara quickly learned the major role that Spain plays in the food and wine business, which is why she decided to return to her native San Sebastian to lead guests on wonderful food and wine tours in the city.

Couple Traveller

We booked a last minute cider house experience and really enjoyed learning a bit about this tradition on the ride over. Then we had an amazing dinner and got to experience the tradition first hand. We rather enjoyed that the guide left us after the ride since it meant we just got to enjoy the evening together as friends and didn’t feel like tourists on a guided tour, although I understand how some may expect the guide to stay with them the whole time if you’ve never done anything like this before and are a bit unsure. The service from the tour company itself was exceptional though, accommodating special requests and even providing introductions for additional activities we were interested in checking out ourselves.
