Basics of Valencia PDO
Valencia’s protected designation of origin (PDO) produces 4 varieties of wine: white, red, rosé and Mistela (muscatel).
Reds and Rosés are made with recognized varieties in Valencia – being Bobal and Monastrell the most famous. Other varieties of red grapes used in a unique mixture include Merlot, Cabernet-Sauvignon and Pinot-Noir among others! Whites are typically a fantastique combination of Verdil and Merseguera, but you’ll also find a little Macebeo, Malvasía and Chardonnay.
On the other hand, Moscatel is the name of the grape that is used in order to produce Mistela. This specialty is not exactly a wine as no fermentation process in involved, however is a unique liquor from Valencia that is very popular as its traditional oenological practice in the Valencian Community started with the must of the Roman Muscatel grape. The result is a sweet and fortified liquor wine that you should try when visiting Valencia.
