Discover the city’s culinary jewels and finish with a unique lunch

On this midday tour through Old Town and La Bretxa market, you’ll be taken out for a unique lunch experience, locally referred to as hamaiketako. Together with your local Sherpa, Naiara, you’ll discover the sights, sounds and aromas of the city at the bustling La Bretxa food market, famous for its top quality regional products. Along the way you’ll identify the renowned caserio (free-range) chicken, chuleton steaks, Tolosa red beans and Ibarra chili peppers. While sightseeing in Old Town San Sebastian, you’ll also stop by selected gourmet shops, famous for Idiazabal cheeses and local sausages such as chistorra and chorizo. Having worked up the appetites, it’s time to head to some of the best pintxo bars in town to experience classic Basque tapas paired with top-quality local wines.

Meet Naiara, Your Native Sherpa

basque country

Naiara went with journalism as her chosen career, but also used her love of all things culinary when she landed a job with a food PR agency in London. Naiara quickly learned the major role that Spain plays in the food and wine business, which is why she decided to return to her native San Sebastian to lead guests on wonderful food and wine tours in the city.

great guide

We opted for the Market visit and Basque Food tour with a guide that was knowledgeable, great fun and took us to some lovely (the best on offer) pintxos bars around the Old Town. We also were treated to little glimpses into some of the wonderful deli style shops and one selling Iberico ham on the bone which we were allowed to sample. We got two pintxos each, along with a glass of wine as part of the tour and she treated us to one extra at her own expense which was really kind. After she left us, we re-visited some of the recommended ones and – although it is very hard to know what you are buying as there is no description in English and many of the bar staff don’t speak English so could not guide us to help, we just took pot luck and enjoyed all we had.
It is a much more inexpensive way to do a food tour of the town, and as there was just the two of us, we really had time to ask questions and take our time.

An Excellent Start to our Spanish Holiday

Elena was superb as our guide around a lunchtime tour of the San Sebastian market and pintxos bars. Not only was she warm and friendly and very knowledgeable but as the result of her help we were able to order pintxos with confidence through the rest of our holiday. She was very patient with all our questions too! I would highly recommend this tour.
